Dr Vittorio Brando: remote sensing of coastal waters

Dr Vittorio Brando is leading remote sensing of coastal waters research and translation of imagery data to environmentally relevant information.

  • 28 September 2009 | Updated 14 October 2011

Current activities

Dr Vittorio Brando’s current research is focused on remote sensing of coastal waters.

His aim is to enable a better understanding of environmental processes of coastal systems through the translation the remote sensing data into relevant information for decision makers or other scientific and non scientific end-users.

His main interests include:

  • optical oceanography in estuarine and coastal systems
  • radiative transfer models in coastal ocean
  • hyperspectral signal and imagery analysis
  • algorithm development for the retrieval of water quality parameters from ocean colour data
  • shallow waters mapping
  • assimilation of remote sensing data into biogeochemical models.

Background

Dr Brando has a background in aquatic ecology and ecological modelling of in shallow water environments.

Dr Brando’s current research is focused on remote sensing of coastal waters with the aim of enabling a better understanding of environmental processes of coastal systems.

He worked on ecological modelling of macro algae colonies dynamics and of trophic interactions in shallow water basins.

Academic qualifications

Dr Brando has been awarded a:

  • Laurea Degree (cum Laude), Environmental Sciences, from the University of Venice, Italy, 1995
  • Doctor of Philosophy, Environmental Systems Modelling, from the University of Padua, Italy, 2000.

Achievements

Dr Brando is the author of:

  • 19 scientific papers
  • eight book chapters
  • 26 conference papers
  • 17 technical reports.

Dr Brando was guest Editor (together with Dr Stuart Phinn) of a special section of the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing on aquatic remote sensing applications in environmental monitoring and management.

Dr Brando is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing.

Dr Brando has won several awards including:

  • Excellence in Science Award at the Coastal Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Annual General Meeting for the Environmental Remote Sensing Group in 2005
  • Excellence in Science Award at the Coastal CRC Annual General Meeting for the Environmental Remote Sensing Group in 2002
  • Junior Environmental Prize 2002 (Premio Sapio per la Ricerca Italiana 2002) for the PhD Thesis work in Orbetello Lagoon in 2002.

Professional activities

Dr Brando is a member of:

  • Optical Society of America (OSA)
  • American Geophysical Union (AGU)
  • Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)
  • Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA).

Dr Brando is the president of Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA), Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.

Dr Brando is Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the School of Geography Science and Planning, University of Queensland, Australia, since 2006.
