Dr You-Gan Wang uses his expertise in statistical research to develop experimental methods and data analysis techniques that help solve important problems in environmental statistics.
Current activities
Dr Wang is a Senior Science Leader with the Landscape Monitoring and Modelling group within CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences.
Dr Wang has extensive experience in:
Dr Wang has made significant contributions to the understanding of Australia's Northern Prawn Fishery.
He has worked with:
Dr Wang's current projects include:
-
developing statistical methods to analyse water quality data: Dr Wang is developing statistical methodologies for analysing water quality data so that effective biological indicators can be identified for an annual Report Card of the Ecosystem Health of South East Queensland waterways
-
developing methods to accurately identify the number of foreign fishing vessels operating illegally inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone, a 200 nautical mile zone for which Australia claims sovereign rights over the fisheries and other resources.
Background
Dr Wang joined CSIRO as a statistician in 1992, providing methodological and statistical advice to biologists.
During this time he initiated a number of projects on marine research and environmental studies.
Dr Wang has made significant contributions to the understanding of Australia's Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) - a multi-species fishery which has annual revenue of about A$60 million.
Dr. Wang developed a multi-species model for the NPF to assess the biological and economic effectiveness of seasonal closures in relation to yield, income, net operating income and spawning-stock indices.
He has also established the stock-recruitment relationships based on the logbook data.
This opens the possibility of scrutinizing the NPF study and examining environmental effects on this fishery.
More accurate risk evaluation of fisheries management strategies may result from this method.
In 1998, Dr Wang accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Harvard University, United States of America (USA) and was promoted to Associate Professor of Biostatistics in 2000.
During his time at Harvard Dr Wang designed and implemented statistical analyses for several AIDS-related clinical trials.
From 2001-05 Dr Wang held the position of Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Wang rejoined CSIRO in 2005 as a Senior Science Leader within CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences.
Academic qualifications
Dr Wang has been awarded a:
-
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Zhejiang University, China, in 1986
-
Master of Science in Statistics from Peking University, China, in 1988
-
Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, in 1991.
