Current activities
As Theme Leader for Biomedical Manufacturing Dr Scott Martin is responsible for coordinating research, done in collaboration with industry, leading to the development of high-tech devices and therapeutic agents in CSIRO Future Manufacturing Flagship.
Background
Born and raised in the Cornish town of Penzance in the south of England, Dr Martin joined CSIRO Industrial Physics (as it was then) in 1993 as a Postdoctoral Fellow developing optical biosensors for veterinary and medical diagnostics.
He was seconded to the Australian Membrane and Biosensor Research Institute (AMBRI) joint venture in 1997.
While at AMBRI, Dr Martin led a team responsible for developing an automated biosensor platform for high throughput screening (a step in the process of discovering new pharmaceuticals).
Later Dr Martin was appointed Senior Production Manager with oversight of the AMBRI biosensor production facility. AMBRI is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
Dr Martin returned to CSIRO in 2000 to lead a project to develop and commercialise optical technologies applied to lithographic offset printing, for use in newspaper presses.
Prior to the merger of CSIRO's Divisions of Industrial Physics and Manufacturing and Materials Technology, Dr Martin was Deputy General Manager of CSIRO Industrial Physics (appointed in 2003) and Leader of the physical security and public safety Theme.
In this role he coordinated research developing detection and response systems that reduce the vulnerability of Australians, our infrastructure and our interests to terrorist activities and major accidents.
Academic qualifications
Dr Martin has been awarded a:
- Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Physics from The University of Exeter, United Kingdom, in 1987
- Doctor of Philosophy from the same university in 1991 for his thesis on molecular electronics and optics
- Postgraduate Diploma in Management from Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
Achievements
Dr Martin's career highlights include that articles based on his Doctoral work appeared in Physical Review Letters and New Scientist in 1993 and that he was made Honorary Treasurer of the Australian Institute of Physics in 2005.
