Current activities

Dr Senthold Asseng uses simulation modelling to analyse dynamic interactions between crops, soils and the atmosphere to improve profitability and sustainability of cropping systems in rain-fed environments.

His research is on systems analysis in climate change and climate variability impact and adaptation and the integration of bio-physical and social aspects in agricultural landscapes.

Dr Asseng is a Project Leader in the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship and the CSIRO Agriculture Sustainability Flagship.

Dr Asseng is the Science Coordinator of Agriculture Research Western Australia’s Climate Adaptation Program, a multi-million dollar research initiative combining research activities from University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and Curtin University, the Department of Agriculture and CSIRO.

He is a Project Leader in the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship and the CSIRO Agriculture Sustainability Flagship.

Background

Dr Asseng joined CSIRO in 1994.

Born in Berlin, Germany, Dr Asseng’s major research interests are in system analysis to understand, compare and improve the productivity and sustainability of atmosphere-crop-soil systems changing over time and at different scales.

Academic qualifications

Dr Asseng has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science in Agronomy, from Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Humboldt University, in 1989
  • Master of Science in Agronomy with Honours also from Humboldt University, in 1990
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Agronomy/Crop Modelling, also from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, in 1994
  • Doctor of Science in Agronomy/Crop Modelling, from the Technical University, Munich, Germany, in 2004
  • Adjunct Professor at The University of Western Australia, in 2007.
