Dr Steve Harvey: Deputy Chief, CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering

Dr Steve Harvey is Deputy Chief and Operations Director of CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering.

Current activities

Dr Harvey is Deputy Chief of the CSIRO Division of Earth Science and Resource Engineering, and works closely with the Chief, Dr Mike McWilliams, in providing management and leadership of the Division.

He is responsible for overseeing the performance of research support functions. He also sits on Boards in which CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering is a joint venture partner, and manages the Division's relationships with Western Australian statutory bodies and Western Australian-based universities.

Australia's economic future depends on finding new resources to replace those we have already mined, and on mining those resources in a socially, economically and environmentally acceptable way.

CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering applies world-leading science and engineering know-how to raise Australia's competitive advantage in this vital sector.

Background

After completing his Doctorate, Dr Harvey took up a position as Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alabama in the United States of America (USA).

Dr Harvey serves as a member on a wide range of Boards and Councils.

Upon returning to Australia he worked in a range of policy related roles within the Western Australian public sector, principally through the West Australian Department of Transport.

In 1995 Dr Harvey joined CSIRO Exploration and Mining as Scientific Assistant to the Chief/ Senior Adviser Policy and Planning.  In 1997 he was appointed as General Manager of the Division.

Academic qualifications

Dr Harvey has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science with Honours, University of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia, in 1983
  • Doctor of Philosophy, also from the University of Western Australia, in 1988.

Dr Harvey serves as a member on the following Boards and Councils:

  • Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration
  • CSIRO representative (and Deputy Chair) on the iVEC Board of Management (High Performance Computing and Visualisation Centre)
  • Australian Centre for Geomechanics
  • John de Laeter Centre for Mass Spectrometry
  • Central TAFE Governing Council (appointment through the Minister for Education and Training)
  • Chair - LotteryWest Biomedical Research Facility Board of Management
  • Australian Resources Research Centre Advisory Committee
  • Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) Regional Geoscience Mapping and Mineral Resources Technical Sub-Committee
  • CSIRO alternate on the GSWA Liaison Committee.
