CSIRO’s Cotton Research Unit at the Australian Cotton Research Institute (ACRI) near Narrabri, NSW, is CSIRO’s hub of cotton research.

  • 26 July 2005

Summary

CSIRO’s Cotton Research Unit has extensive laboratory, glasshouse and field sites available for cotton research.

The Unit was established in 1972 when CSIRO cotton scientists previously based in Kununurra, in Western Australia, Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory, and Griffith, in New South Wales, teamed up and moved to Narrabri in the heart of the cotton growing industry in the north-west of New South Wales.

The Australian Cotton Research Institute hosts:

  • CSIRO
  • NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI)
  • Cotton Catchment Communities Cooperative Research Centre (Cotton CRC).

Activities

CSIRO’s Cotton Research Unit:

  • breeds new cotton varieties with higher yields and better quality fibre
  • develops sustainable cropping systems
  • improves integrated pest management
  • delivers science to agribusiness.

The Unit has contributed significantly to the cotton industry by addressing problems with innovative and practical science.

An independent review showed CSIRO’s cotton research returns A$50 for every dollar invested.

Personnel

More than 70 CSIRO staff work at the Unit including:

  • plant breeders
  • entomologists
  • agronomists
  • software developers
  • water and soil scientists
  • extension officers.
