CSIRO and James Cook University (JCU) are working together to create a world class tropical research hub to be located at JCU's Townsville campus.
Background
In 2005, CSIRO and JCU formed a strategic alliance known as the JCU/CSIRO Tropical Landscapes Joint Venture (TLJV) to facilitate collaborative research between these two world-class institutes.
As part of the TLJV initiative, staff from the CSIRO Davies Laboratory and staff from two faculties of JCU will co-locate into a new state of the art building currently under construction on JCU's Townsville campus.
The new building will be the first to be completed as part of the Australian Tropical Sciences and Innovation Precinct (ATSIP).
“JCU and CSIRO have complimentary research profiles and ATSIP will provide the platform for greater and innovative research partnerships.”
Professor Sandra Harding, Vice- Chancellor, JCU
ATSIP in Townsville creates an opportunity to position Australia as a pre-eminent provider of research to industries and communities in the world's tropics.
ATSIP's goals
The goals of ATSIP are to:
-
position Australia as a pre-eminent provider of knowledge in the world’s tropical regions
-
act as a centre of excellence in tropical science
-
develop the northern Australian economy with knowledge, ideas and innovations
-
provide information for sustainably managing Australia’s northern terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Research
Research at ATSIP will focus on finding scientific solutions for sustainable natural resource use in the tropics.
The co-location of staff from CSIRO and JCU will see the continuation and development of research in the following broad areas:
-
understanding the ecology of the landscape to assist with sustainable management
-
sustainable water management
-
sustainable livestock systems for northern Australia
-
intensive production systems in tropical landscapes
-
understanding the genetics and breeding of sugarcane and development of new varieties
-
marine and coastal processes and production systems
-
integrated approaches to managing change in tropical regional communities.
