The modern CSIRO Discovery building houses an interactive showcase of science and technology.

Canberra: Black Mountain, ACT (CSIRO Discovery)

At CSIRO Discovery, visitors can explore and experience a sophisticated and interactive exhibition with lots of activities for people of all ages.

CSIRO Discovery is an interactive exhibition showcasing CSIRO's achievements in science and technology.

The exhibition includes 18 sophisticated, interactive exhibits and a range of activities for people of all age groups.

Some of Discovery’s exhibit highlights include:

  • CSIROvision: a  fantastic 3D presentation of CSIRO’s history, breadth, and scientific achievements

  • an energy exhibition which looks at renewable energy and provides an insight into the ‘hydrogen future’, including a hydrogen car

  • a biodiversity display which shows how our research is trying to conserve and manage Australia’s natural grassy woodland

  • how CSIRO is conducting research to improve human health, with breakthroughs such as contact lenses that can be worn for 30 days; improved skin cancer detection; the development flu vaccine, and better medical imaging

  • a face-recognition technology exhibit
    CSIRO Discovery is one of the first centres in the world to focus on real and current scientific research through its exhibition and education programs.


  • the Haptic workbench: a 3D, touch sensitive computer

  • the ‘Wedge’ - Nortel Networks virtual reality theatre - a wrap-around 3D immersive virtual reality theatre

  • CSIRO’s role in gene technology and read about our research towards improving crops and food products

  • our collection of press clippings and daily news updates about the latest news in gene technology

  • InfoCell, to read a selection of free CSIRO publications or use the individual work stations to access the Internet, CD-ROMs and audio material.

You can also conduct your own research in the OptusLab – an exciting hands-on science lab for all age groups.

This award-winning complex also has several function and exhibit areas that can cater for your conferences, meetings, launches and events.
