CarbonKids Educational Resources

CarbonKids is a program for schools committed to tackling climate change. The educational resources offer a range of ideas and activities for the early, primary and middle years of schooling and enable students to achieve outcomes set out in State and Territory curriculum frameworks.

  • 10 August 2010 | Updated 16 January 2012

The units and complementary materials have been developed to assist students in developing an understanding of:

  • climate change and its impact on society and environments
  • the interrelationship between the greenhouse emissions, the environment and our society
  • how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in schools and local communities
  • the role of forest biodiversity and biosequestration in addressing climate change
  • how to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and take action to tackle climate change.

The educational resources are designed to be integrated into key learning areas in the Curriculum of Australian Schools.

They consist of a range of activities and research tasks that encourage investigative, critical thinking and communication skills, and can be used as a single resource document or for ideas on activities for existing frameworks.

You are welcome to download and use any of the following material, however the resource pages linked to each unit do not appear on this website. For the full versions, please register for CarbonKids or contact us at CarbonKids@csiro.au.

Introduction to CarbonKids describes how the program can be used in your school community, the scope and structure of the resource and descriptions of the units.

CK Teacher Notes

The CarbonKids Teacher Notes provides detailed information on the topics covered by each of the units explored by the program.

Units

In the CarbonKids unit 'Agriculture in a Changing Climate', students investigate some of the likely implications of climate change on the major agricultural industries in Australia.

Investigating Carbon Kids

The unit 'Investigating CarbonKids' explores the diverse range of topics involved in the CarbonKids program.

Understanding Climate Change

The unit 'Understanding Climate Change' introduces students to the key issues involved with global change and how they relate to our changing climate.

In the unit 'Carbon Chemistry', students investigate the chemical properties of carbon, its roles and its movement through the atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere.

Plants

In the unit 'Plants and our Climate', students investigate the importance in understanding the role plants play in the carbon cycle.

Biodiversity

In the unit 'Biodiversity', students investigate what we mean by biodiversity and its significance in maintaining the health of many ecosystems.

Changing Climate

In the unit 'A Changing Climate', students will initiate investigations into human-induced threats to our climate and study ways in which individuals, communities, industry and Government can tackle climate change.

CarbonKids in Action

During the unit 'CarbonKids in Action', students investigate new and existing technologies and actions that may stabilise and reduce Australia’s impact on climate change.

Microclimates

The unit 'Investigating Microclimates' explores small environments in local outdoor areas so that students develop an understanding of microclimates and microenvironments.

CarbonKids is a CSIRO education program with funding support from Bayer.

The CarbonKids pilot program was supported by Shell.
