satelite pictureThere's a storm outside and all of a sudden you and all your neighbours are left with no power.

It's time to call in the experts. And this expert from ACTEW Corporation knows exactly where to go to fix the problem. He's consulted the skies.

When ACTEW Corporation, the suppliers of electricity and water in Canberra, are called in an emergency, they don't leave it up to guess work or paper maps, which may be out of date.

With CSIRO's help, they are trialing the use of the global positioning satellites, originally devised to navigate nuclear submarines, to locate the cause of the problem.

Armed with laptop computers they set out in the area of distress.

Base will then send up to the minute information about that area so they can head straight to the faulty equipment.

"Using the global positioning satellite and mobile communications, allows crews to get up to date information to locate trouble spots. And this technology can be used by any organisation that needs to maintain equipment in the field."

And once your problem is solved... the operator in the field then uploads details of the job just completed, directly to the main database... and then receives information about the next trouble spot.
