Small scale, big impact

Quantum is one of our most promising growth opportunities to create new markets, new applications and new jobs in Australia.

Quantum physics explains the behaviour of the world at the smallest scale. We can isolate, control and sense individual quantum particles. As a result, previously unattainable properties can now be used in new types of quantum electronics.

From this we can create new technologies including precision sensors, secure communications networks, and an entirely new form of incredibly powerful computation – quantum computing. These technologies could accelerate drug and materials development in healthcare; enhance national security and support defence; increase productive mineral exploration and water resource management for mining and other sectors; and improve secure communications for industries like Space.

Commercial applications of these technologies are already emerging, and Australia is one of the world’s leaders.

Quantum roadmap

In 2020, CSIRO developed a Quantum
Roadmap to help facilitate the creation of a quantum industry in Australia,
and to support the research community, government and industry to link-up,
collaborate and commercialise.

We already have an exciting quantum
industry beginning to grow in Australia, but we believe Australia’s research excellence in this field can enable a greater long-term opportunity. That's why we collaborated with the World Economic Forum in 2022 to develop the first guidelines for the responsible use of quantum computing and ensure quantum produces equitable outcomes for all Australians.

Quantum Future Science Platform

CSIRO’s Quantum Technology Future Science Platform is building capability and expertise to play a key role in the emerging global quantum industry. But what is Quantum?

[Music plays and a split circle appears and photographs of CSIRO activities flash through in either side of the circle, and then the circle morphs into the CSIRO logo]

Narrator: The Quantum Industry is one of Australia’s most promising growth opportunities. Quantum technologies are creating new products, new markets, and new jobs, and Australia has long been a leader in quantum research.

But what is Quantum?

[Animation image shows the question mark morphing into tiny bubbles which then morph into various shapes of bubbles moving over the screen]

It is based on quantum mechanics, which describes how things behave at the very small scale.

[Animation image changes to show a hand catching and holding one of the bubbles]

There’s no way around it, quantum is strange, and is not intuitive, but we can predict what it will do and how we can make use of it.

[Animation image changes to show a row of bubbles and symbols appear around the bubbles and then the line of bubbles morph into squares]

By controlling and measuring single quantum objects like atoms, ions, electrons or photons

and operating across the boundaries of physics, computing, and engineering,

[Animation image shows the squares morphing together into blocks which then morph into a map of Australia]

we can make quantum technologies that open up a whole new realm of possibilities.

[Animation image shows the blocks in the map of Australia moving up and down, and then the camera zooms in on the blocks]

We’re developing the software tools and understanding to allow quantum computers to tackle real-world problems

[Animation images move through to show a symbol of a sun and cloud, and then catalysts joining together in a line]

like the fast and accurate prediction of global and local weather patterns, or the design of new catalysts, materials, or drugs

[Animation images move through to show symbols of a sun and plant, a satellite moving around the Earth, a DNA strand and medical cross, and a padlock across the front of a line of data]

for use across agriculture, aerospace or medicine, and to ensure computer networks and communication platforms are cybersecure.

[Animation image changes to show a dot pattern morphing into a square of dots and then the camera zooms out to show a microchip, and then the animation image changes to show a world globe]

We're also developing new quantum materials and quantum sensing tools that could lead to devices with higher sensitivity, and reduced size, weight, and power demands, and that will help us better understand life and the world around us.

That’s why Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has launched the Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform.

[Animation image shows a dollar symbol appearing below the logo, and then a symbol of a city appears below the logo, and symbols of a mortar board and a factory appear either side of the logo]

It’s part of our $200 million programme that pushes the boundaries of existing research through deeper collaboration with universities and industry.

Drawing on our research expertise, the Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform will help build world-class quantum capability.

[Animation image changes to show three workers and symbols of a plane and ship, a satellite, a tree, a first aid kid, a Wi-Fi symbol, and a pill bottle appear above them]

We will work with industry to identify the problems that can’t be solved using today’s technologies,

[Animation image shows a circle of bubbles appearing in the centre and linking to the symbols above the workers, and then the image changes to show a map of Australia covered with a network design]

and develop next generation solutions using quantum technologies, so that Australia can continue playing a key role in the emerging global quantum industry.

[Camera zooms out and two circles appear around the Australian map]

The future is quantum, and we are working to ensure Australia is ready for it.
