Contamination, even if it is a single foreign fibre, can lead to the downgrading of yarn, fabric or garments to second quality or even the total rejection of an entire consignment.
The Australian cotton industry through CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering, with the support of the Cotton Catchment and Communities' Cooperative Research Centre, conducted a survey between 2006 to 2008 into contamination levels in Australian cotton and compared the results with international contamination trends.
The survey found that the amount of contamination in Australian cotton bales continues to be small relative to other growths worldwide.
