CSIRO provides wheat and barley breeders and pre-breeders with a suite of research outputs to assist them to breed improved varieties.
These web pages aim to stimulate detailed discussions between breeders and prebreeders on utilisation of these outputs. As well as enhancing uptake of research outputs the information provided herein also aims to increase communication between these two groups and improve collaboration at early stages of research.
CSIRO prebreeding research in wheat and barley takes a national perspective on germplasm development and mechanisms underlying enhanced adaptation to major grain growing regions. It addresses the following industry issues: better water use efficiency, salinity and acid soil tolerance, nutrient utilisation, rust, crown rot and viral resistance, plant architecture traits, grain quality and traits for improved human health.
