Climate change: the latest science - presentation

This PowerPoint presentation, delivered at Parliament House on 16 March 2009, summarises the scientific evidence about climate change and its impacts for Australia. (37 pages)

The evidence for human-induced changes to the Earth's climate is mounting. Changes in rainfall patterns, temperature and sea levels have been observed over the last 50 years that cannot be explained by natural factors alone.

The amount of future climate change depends on the level of global greenhouse gas emissions. The projected impacts for Australia include changes in the pattern of extreme weather events, reduced rainfall in southern Australia, and up to one metre sea level rise by the end of the century.

The challenge of climate change is being addressed through adaptation (preparing for the impacts of climate change to reduce the negative consequences and take advantage of any possible opportunities) and mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions to address the cause of climate change).

The presentation includes the following sections:

  • observed and projected global climate change
  • Australian climate change and impacts
  • seeking solutions to the climate change challenge.
