Bronze CREST project ideas

A list of Bronze CREST science and technology projects to provide inspiration for students wanting to try open-ended investigations.

Although these projects are listed as Bronze CREST projects, students at other levels can also undertake similar projects.

You might also be interested in seeing a list of Blue CREST project ideas. There is very little difference betweeen Blue and Bronze CREST Awards. Blue CREST Awards are recommended for primary school students whereas Bronze CREST Awards are for secondary students.

Biology science projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST projects to explore:

  • salt-tolerance in plants
  • whether plants can purify and revitalise the air in classrooms
  • whether water-retaining crystals improve plant growth
  • how to prevent snails eating lettuce seedlings
  • the best soil to support a structure in wet conditions
  • the effect of UV radiation on the concentration of vitamin C in oranges
  • which soil is best for daisy cuttings.

Physics science projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST projects to explore:

  • whether the design of a tennis racquet affects the bounce of a tennis ball
  • how well a shoe grips
  • the effect of temperature on the bounce of tennis balls
  • the strongest concrete mixture.

Kitchen chemistry science projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST projects to explore:

  • citric acid levels in commercial and freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • whether pumpkins cook more quickly with the lid on the saucepan
  • the effect of modified atmosphere packaging on the shelf life of refrigerated food
  • the accuracy of milk expiry dates
  • the effectiveness of household disinfectives
  • the perfect pancake.

Around the house technology projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST Awards by inventing:

  • a scrap collector for the kitchen sink
  • edible packaging
  • an improved washing up glove
  • a portable hot water shower unit
  • a toilet seat alarm
  • a new milk carton.

Sport technology projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST Awards by inventing:

  • a redesigned knee construction brace
  • a cricket ball retriever
  • a stronger skateboard design
  • a dancer's toe pad
  • a better horse rug.

Hobbies technology projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST Awards by inventing:

  • an instrument carrier for a bike
  • a better doggy door
  • a fruit picker
  • an insect-proof letter box
  • a new and improved rose cutter
  • an electronic dog restrainer
  • biodegradable plant containers with plant nutrients.

Other technology projects

Students have completed Bronze CREST Awards by inventing:

  • a cry-no-more baby rocker
  • a desktop wind tunnel
  • a rain guard for car doors
  • a cold compartment for a supermarket trolley
  • a computer-controlled security system
  • improved traffic barriers
