Tasmanian ICT Centre goal and objectives

The Tasmanian ICT Centre supports the Intelligent Island objective of contributing to development in Tasmania.

Tasmanian ICT Centre goal

The primary goal of establishing the Tasmanian Information and Communication Technologies Centre (TasICTC) is to support the Intelligent Island objective of contributing to the development of an internationally competitive ICT sector in Tasmania.

Tasmanian ICT Centre objectives

TasICTC’s objectives are to:

  • develop a world-class ICT research capacity
  • conduct innovative applied research, initially in sensor networks and data management
  • seek to commercialise outcomes of this research.

In pursuit of this, TasICTC will engage and collaborate with:

  • Tasmanian ICT industry
  • key ICT users
  • research organisations.

Strategy

TasICTC’s objectives will be achieved through four key strategies:

Creating a research capability, delivering research outcomes, building partnerships with researchers and industry.
  • building research capability – creating a pool of high quality ICT researchers with entrepreneurial skills.

    TasICTC is also committed to:
    • increasing the availability within Tasmania of world-class ICT research skills
    • providing postgraduate training
    • attracting ICT researchers from within Australia and overseas.
  • conducting innovative research – delivering high-level research outcomes relevant to industry and aligned with the National Research Flagships program.

    TasICTC will:
    • focus its research in the areas of sensor networks and data management
    • target impact in application domains that deliver significant impact for Tasmania and Tasmanian industries.
  • developing linkages and collaborations – building networks in Tasmania and beyond, with the ICT industry, education and research organisations.

TasICTC will also act as a catalyst for the ICT industry in Tasmania and facilitate participation in CSIRO’s major research programs.
  • undertaking knowledge and technology transfer – generating value from TasICTC’s research outcomes in partnership with Tasmanian businesses and for national benefit.

TasICTC will also provide opportunities for Tasmanian industry to access Intellectual Property (IP) from across CSIRO.

There is an interconnected flow for these four areas which see:

  • the creation of a research capability
  • delivering research outcomes in response to identified needs
  • building the partnerships with researchers and industry which will lead to impact.
