Bio21 Collaborative Crystallisation Centre (Bio21-C³)

The Bio21 Collaborative Crystallisation Centre (Bio21-C³) provides the infrastructure to advance the process of protein crystallisation and the production of the crystals which are required to obtain atomic-level protein structures.

Background

The Collaborative Crystallisation Centre greatly enhances the capabilities of the Bio21 crystallographic research community by building on the strategic investment in all aspects of biology – including biotechnology and medical research – already made in Victoria, Australia, and contributing to its successful commercialisation.

Bio21-C³ will ensure that Victorian research institutions extract maximum value from the Australian synchrotron.

The Collaborative Crystallisation Centre enhances the capabilities of Australia’s structural biology research community, by providing access to high-throughput crystallisation.

More importantly, the centre has a strong commitment to development, and is a world leader in developing novel, practical tools for protein crystallisation.

Together with the Australian Synchrotron, the C³ allows researchers from Victoria and beyond access to state-of-the art facilities for structural biology.

'Even a small improvement in our ability to grow protein crystals could lead to a significant increase in the rate of biomedical outcomes', says Dr Janet Newman, C³ Facility Manager.

Run as a not-for-profit technology platform, the Centre is accessible by all research groups within Victoria including:

'Bio21-C³ supplies the resources to develop novel strategies in protein crystallogenesis, by providing our users with easy access to current state of the art protein crystallisation techniques.'
