Are you unsure of which dairy foods are best for children? Concerned about the amount of time children spend watching TV? Families are invited to take part in a new CSIRO study that will test strategies to make it easier for children to choose appropriate foods and leisure time activities.
About the project
CSIRO researchers are undertaking a study to test simple strategies to get kids off the couch and make it easier to choose appropriate dairy foods.
The study will look at whether advice to parents helps kids to make positive changes.
Most kids drink whole milk so it is important to understand if drinking other types of milk will make a difference to their health and whether they substitute milk with other foods.
CSIRO are recruiting families living in metropolitan South Australia with children aged between 4 and 13 years for this important study.
Seventy-five per cent of kids spend more than the recommended amount of time in front of the TV or playing computer games, so the study will also explore whether targeted policy advice has a positive impact on children's leisure time choices.
Both areas are important to develop good habits early to provide a stronger foundation for the next generation of Australians.
How to get involved
We would like to hear from you if:
-
you are a parent of a child aged between 4 and 13 years
-
your child consumes at least two serves of dairy foods per day, such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, dairy desserts, ice-cream
-
your child does not regularly consume reduced-fat dairy products
-
you are willing to participate in a study that involves six visits to the CSIRO clinic in the Adelaide CBD, over a 24-week period.
Parents will need to complete a questionnaire, have their height and weight recorded and attend individual sessions with a dietitian to receive detailed advice on nutrition and activity and how to go about changing family habits.
Children's food intake, physical measurements, lipids and cholesterol will be recorded.
Each session will take about 30 to 60 minutes. Incentives are offered as part of study participation to acknowledge the time and commitment involved.
