Holden's ECOmmodore in front of Uluru

CSIRO developed the drive train for Holden’s petrol-electric ECOmmodore.

Energy-efficient electric machines

CSIRO is reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by designing and developing energy-efficient electric machines and drives.

  • 17 April 2008 | Updated 14 October 2011

CSIRO designs and develops electric motors and generators, related magnetic devices, power and control electronics.

We work closely with clients developing a design that meets their individual needs.

Our work combines sophisticated mathematical modelling with deep knowledge of magnetic materials and electronics. We also have the skills and facilities to build prototypes.

Skills

Our expertise is in:

  • in-wheel motors
  • drive trains
  • lightweight, high-speed, small motors
  • control and power electronics
  • computer aided design and advanced mathematical modelling
  • material selection and development, including permanent magnets
  • switched reluctance and permanent magnet motors.

Results

Our motors achieve:

  • greater than 95 per cent energy efficiency
  • improved reliability
  • high torque-to-weight and power-to-weight ratios
  • a lot in a small space (small motors are our speciality)
The drive train CSIRO developed for Holden’s petrol-electric ECOmmodore uses less fuel than the equivalent conventional vehicle.
  • cool and quiet operation
  • low cost.

Applications

Our expertise is most commonly used in the design of:

  • pumps
  • compressors
  • domestic appliances
  • mining
  • hybrid vehicles.

Outcomes

Our projects include:

  • Holden ECOmmodore
  • Electrolux direct drive washing machines
  • aXessaustralia low emission vehicle
  • motors for solar cars
  • solar powered pumps
  • oil well mule
  • hand-held machines.
