CSIRO climate model results used for international benchmarking studies

CSIRO results will be used for international benchmarking studies and will be part of the next international science assessment of climate change.

In late 2005, CSIRO transferred the results from the Mk3.0 CSIRO coupled climate model to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Report 4 (IPCC AR4) data collection centre.

The CSIRO results will be used for international benchmarking studies and will be part of the next international science assessment of climate change.

The application of this model is critical to the Wealth from Oceans Flagship's key research initiatives in long-term climate change simulations.

Meanwhile, the new CSIRO model Mk3.5 represents a significant improvement over the preceding Mk3.0 model in aspects relevant to oceanic regions near Australia.

The CSIRO Mk3.5 model will be an important tool for climate modellers studying the impacts of climate change, for example in simulating rainfall changes over southern Australia.

The most significant improvements result from the use of a more physically realistic set of parameters to represent the transport of heat and freshwater by oceanic eddies.

It also features considerably more realistic circulation and stratification in the Southern Ocean.
