Developing sustainable fishery harvest strategies

Scientists from the Wealth from Oceans Flagship have contributed to the Harvest Strategy Policy and Guidelines for Commonwealth fisheries.

  • 7 September 2007 | Updated 14 October 2011

A Harvest Strategy Working Group led by CSIRO has developed harvest strategies for Eastern and Western Tuna and Billfish fisheries, with similar ongoing work in the Northern Prawn Fishery and the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark fishery.

CSIRO has also led the development of harvest strategies for data-poor fisheries managed by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA).

Outcome

Harvest strategies are preset rules that state how catch levels should be adjusted to maintain fisheries stocks above sustainable levels.

They are part of a suite of new measures being introduced by AFMA to ensure ecological sustainability in Commonwealth-managed fisheries.

They are an important innovation for science-based decision making for sustainable fisheries.
