CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club can provide benefits and freebies for school including:

• a free membership for school use

Bulk magazine subscriptions

Schools and groups can purchase ten or more subscriptions to The Helix or Scientriffic for only A$19 per subscription per year (six issues).

Bulk subscriptions include a Teacher's Guide with curriculum links, extension activities and more. Download the Double Helix Science Club bulk subscription order form.

Please note: Bulk magazine subscribers are not Double Helix members. Bulk magazine subscriptions do not count toward Double Helix school groups or entitle the subscriber to benefits of Double Helix membership.

School science prize

The Double Helix school science prize offers a free membership to CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club in return for Double Helix information being featured in your school’s newsletter. The prize is only available to Australian schools.

The prize can be used as a school award (a certificate is provided), student incentive or in the library. Only one award is issued per school per year.

School Groups

CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club can operate as a school-based science club. It allows interested students and teachers to go beyond the science classroom during lunchtime or after school.

To establish a Double Helix school group, you need to register:

• five or more current Double Helix Science Club members from your school, and
• a teacher willing to act as a group coordinator.

What a school group does

There are no rules about what activities a school group should do. Activities might include:

• trying each week's Science by Email activity
• discussions of articles and trying activities from The Helix or Scientriffic
• activities from Stress-Free Science or other CSIRO education books and kits
• members of the group undertaking a CREST project either individually or in small groups
• visits from local scientists
• visits to local science labs, universities, centres or other scientific institutions
• watching SCOPE and trying the activities
• Double Helix Science Club activities
• making links with other club school groups.

Support for school groups

Once the Double Helix school group has been registered, the group coordinator will receive:

• a free one-year membership to CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club, including six issues of either The Helix or Scientriffic magazine
• a copy of the Stress-Free Science activity book, which contains 17 science activities using materials which are easy to obtain
• visits, where possible, from the CSIRO Science Education Centres (CSIROSECs) in your state.
