Description
Most schools have difficulty providing practical genetic engineering activities for their students. A dynamic laboratory program at CSIRO Education in Highett, Australia, can provide experience and knowledge in genetic engineering applications and processes.

CSIRO Education offers hands-on genetic engineering activities for Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) students.
These include:
- separation of DNA fragments by gel electrophoresis
- transformation of bacteria using plasmid DNA
- an interactive discussion explaining techniques used in the session as well as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and pertinent ethical issues
- optional section – gathering first hand data to demonstrate Mendelian patterns of inheritance
All equipment, student worksheets and follow-up material for teachers are provided. Students should bring a pen or pencil.

This workshop is available for VCE Biology Unit 4 students and is run at CSIRO Education in Highett only.
The workshop caters for a maximum of 24 students per session and costs:
- $200 per 2 hour session
- $220 per 2.5 hour session which includes optional section (on Mendelian patterns of inheritance)
In 2010, most sessions and bookings are GST free.
This program is available from Tuesday 13 July to Friday 3 September 2010 (inclusive). Bookings are essential.
