Teacher professional development (Victoria)

Information about primary and secondary teacher in-services run by CSIRO in Victoria.

  • 24 October 2008 | Updated 14 October 2011

CSIRO Education can travel to your school with stimulating, curriculum-relevant professional development sessions for both primary and secondary teachers. These cover a wide range of topics and can be tailored to suit the needs of your school. We are also able to host professional development sessions at our Centre in Highett.

We have had great success using student activities to explore teaching and learning issues and curriculum outcomes.

Below is a list of professional development options. We also suggest that you peruse our range of student programs in case there is another topic that would be useful for your staff. All sessions include a set of written notes.

Possible topics include

Astronomy
Inside our portable planetarium, learn about the night sky, the seasons, night and day, the phases of the Moon, and the constellations. Gain an understanding of stars, nebulae and space exploration and technology.

Basic Chemistry
This session includes hands-on activities and covers concepts such as reversible and irreversible reactions, solids, liquids and gases, and the relationships between materials and their uses.

Energy
Covering a sub-strand of the CSF and a popular learning unit, this session uses surprising demonstrations and hands-on activities to examine types of energy and the concepts of transforming energy from one type to another and transferring it from one place to another.

Gene Technology
Engage in a discussion of basic genetics and pertinent technological and ethical issues. Carry out a DNA extraction and a gel electrophoresis experiment.

Science Procedures and Processes
Through a series of fun, hands-on activities, gain an understanding of the processes and philosophy of science. Concepts such as hypotheses, variables and fair tests are explored in this 90-minute session.
