Join the team at CSIROÕs Data61 Foreword CSIROÕs Data61 Ð the dedicated data and digital armÊofÊAustraliaÕs national science agency. In mid-2020, I decided to take a leap of faith. I moved from a very secure job, which I enjoyed immensely, to take up a new challenge as Director of CSIROÕs Data61 for threeÊreasons. Firstly, CSIRO is home to the largest group of data and digital technology researchers in Australia Ð and one of the largest in the world. We have more than 1000Êresearchers working across CSIRO coming up with new digital solutions to tackle national and global grandÊchallenges. If you want to do something at scale, you should beÊwith aÊteam that operates at scale. Secondly, being part of AustraliaÕs national science agencyÊÐÊa unique 100 year old organisation where you can mix seamlessly with scientists from all disciplines Ð means that crossing disciplinary boundaries is easier than anywhere else. The interesting problems no longer lie within disciplinary silos Ð real innovation comes when you work across boundaries and this kind of approach is encouraged and celebrated at CSIRO. Thirdly, CSIRO takes impact seriously. ItÕs why we exist. Yes,Êwe push the boundaries of scientific endeavour, but once weÕve created a new solution, we donÕt stop there. WeÊdonÕt stop until weÕve put real solutions into the hands of real people. If you want your research to have a meaningful impact on peopleÕs lives, then CSIRO is your kind of place. Digital technologies have never been more relevant than they are now. Across the globe, technologies, including AI are transforming our daily lives, and presenting new opportunities to solve previously intractable problems. We are using digital technologies to help tackle real world challenges from bushfire management to boosting agricultural productivity, from improving cybersecurity to protecting our environments including the Great BarrierÊReef. We take a team-oriented approach at CSIRO, whether thatÕs working with interdisciplinary teams of researchers from across the organisation, or teaming up with industry, governments and universities to get things done. If you enjoy pushing the envelope of scientific enquiry, butÊthen driving your solutions into practice, weÕd love toÊtalk with you about a place in CSIROÕs Data61. Professor Jon Whittle Director, CSIROÕs Data61 CSIRO acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land, sea and waters, of the area that we live and work on across Australia. WeÊacknowledge their continuing connection to their culture andÊwe pay our respects to their Elders past and present.
