CSIRO has worked with partners in Thailand since the 1980s in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and has recently expanded the scope of our partnerships to include astronomy, food and health, and biosecurity.

As CSIRO strengthens its presence in the ASEAN region, the scope of our research partnerships continues to grow.

CSIRO has an extensive history of agricultural collaboration in Thailand through funding from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Since the 1980s CSIRO has contributed to Thai agriculture, forestry and fisheries activities in over thirty different projects.

CSIRO and Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade have collaborated with Khon Kaen University on the Future Farming in Northeast Thailand study, a component of the Mekong Futures program of work. The study aimed to enhance economic development through the expansion of large‐scale irrigation projects and agribusiness promotion.

The research developed participatory scenario processes for Northeast Thailand, framed by larger‐scale (national and Mekong) contexts and possibilities. Scenarios and associated models have informed Thai River Basin Committee planning processes.

In May 2018, CSIRO signed a Letter of Intent with The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand. The agreement is aimed to encourage joint research activities in the areas of Astronomy and Astrophysics and associated technologies.

CSIRO is collaborating on a research project in 'indigenous foods for health benefits and diversity' with the Thai Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, Faculty of Technology, Mahasarakham University. The work has resulted in co‐authored papers.

Thailand is a partner in the Remote Microscope Network (RMN). The RMN service originated at CSIRO's Australian National Insect Collection to identify pests and diseases such as mealy bugs or myrtle rust. Thailand has played an important role in ensuring this technology can be delivered to regional farmers in South East Asia.

Five ways we can work together in ASEAN
