About our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cadetships

Developing the next generation of world-class scientists, engineers and staff to support them is critical to building Australia's future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and innovation-capable workforce, and CSIRO is contributing to this by increasing our engagement in educating, training, and mentoring students.

Here's what you need to know

Cadets could find themselves completing part of the Cadetship on our research vessel, The Investigator.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadetship program is part of CSIRO's Indigenous Engagement Strategy, which seeks to increase the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our organisation. Through this strategy, we're enhancing the educational, employment, training and career development opportunities for people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadet, you will get the chance to work with leading scientists and mentors to solve some of Australia's biggest challenges in a range of settings. Our program provides financial assistance to support your full time study and provides 12 weeks of paid work placement at flexible times throughout the year. During periods of full time study you will be provided with a mentor and the opportunity to participate in CSIRO's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Staff Forum which brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadets and employees across the organisation via a monthly webinar.

What our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadetships offer you

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadetship program gives you the opportunity to get some serious career runs on the board before you've even completed your degree!

Cadets receive:

  • a study allowance of $300 per week during periods of full-time study
  • financial assistance of $500 per semester to assist with study costs
  • 12 week paid work placement during each year of the cadetship
  • payment of HECS fees by CSIRO on successful completion of study.
