Joining team CSIRO is a great move, both professionally and personally. We solve big, complex problems that make a real difference to the future of Australia and the planet. This is a challenging, and invigorating environment where you will get to work with amazing people who are achieving amazing things. As a member of the CSIRO team, you will contribute to and be part of an organisation that seeks to continually review and improve how we support and reward our staff, to create a workplace where staff can achieve their best.

Attendance

Our full time team members work 73 hours and 30 minutes each pay fortnight. Part-time staff members work less than full time with time and days of work specified on appointment.

Your hours of work, location and how you conduct your work may have flexibility (depending on the role you are undertaking) and these options should be discussed with your supervisor to help you balance your work and personal commitments, as per our Balance flexible working initiative.

If you accumulate more than the required average work hours over a period of time, with your managers approval you can take these additional hours accrued as time off. Managers will take into account current work demands when making decisions on when flex leave/time of in lieu requests can be taken.

Benevolent fund

The CSIRO Benevolent Fund exists to help our staff members get back on their feet in times of need. Depending on the region you are located in, we have four funds that staff can join and contribute to: Canberra region, New South Wales region, Queensland, Northern Territory region, and Southern region.  Each fund is run by a group of staff volunteers and open to all staff members to join.

Careers at CSIRO

We advertise our vacancies across multiple locations so you have a number of ways to keep well informed. The Vacancies Hub is the main location where we advertise our vacant positions so make sure you visit this page regularly to see the latest roles! You can also sign up for regular Job Alerts which gives you the ability to be notified as soon as the role is advertised. You can tailor your job alerts to specific job areas so you only hear about the roles relevant to you. We also advertise current vacancies via LinkedIn and various external recruitment websites.

Child care

We recognise that many of our team members have family responsibilities. We have on-site CSIROCARE child care facilities at three major sites:

  • Black Mountain, Australian Capital Territory
  • Clayton, Victoria
  • North Ryde, New South Wales

If you are located at one of these sites, you may be eligible to enrol your child at one of our child care facilities. Openings are subject to availability so please talk to us about this during the recruitment process.

Code of conduct

Our Code of Conduct sets out the standard of behaviour expected of CSIRO and everyone working in CSIRO. Visit Code of Conduct to find out more.

CSIRO Awards

The CSIRO Awards recognises the professional achievements of both individuals and teams that are exemplary of our scientific impact, purpose, beliefs, values and strategic direction. Depending on the Award, winners can receive funding to pursue further career development opportunities both locally and abroad. Take a look at the 2017 CSIRO Awards event wrap up to find out more!

Diversity and inclusion

We’re working hard to build a safe and welcoming culture where people can bring their whole selves to work. Valuing and enabling difference empowers our people to unlock their potential to innovate and shape the future for our customers, all Australians and the world.

Find out more about our role in addressing gender equity, how we’re increasing participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the community in STEM and about our Pride@CSIRO network on our Diversity and Inclusion page.

Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020

This page covers a snapshot of our working conditions and what you can expect when you join us. Our Enterprise Agreement includes much more information about our working conditions, as agreed between staff, their representatives including unions and CSIRO. This Agreement contains over 80 clauses that covers specific details about appointment and employment with us; information on career development, performance and rewards; balancing work and personal life; mobility of our staff; dispute resolution and more. Find out more by accessing our Agreement now.

Facilities for nursing mothers

Nursing mothers returning to work are provided with facilities to express breast milk while onsite. These facilities include a lockable area that is clean, hygienic and private. You will have access to comfortable seating, facilities for washing your hands and equipment, as well as adequate refrigeration space for the storage of expressed milk.  Depending on the site that you join, this facility will either take the form of a First Aid room or a dedicated nursing facility.

Leave

We offer comprehensive leave conditions that can be accessed at various stages of your time with us. Further information is available via Leave conditions and entitlements.

Prior service

New team members who have previously been employed within the Australian Public Service, a Commonwealth Government authority, a State public service or authority, local government bodies or by one of many Australian universities may have the length of their previous employment recognised as service contributing towards some leave entitlements provided by CSIRO. There are some conditions that accompany this so we recommend speaking with us during the recruitment process to address any queries.

Salary

We offer competitive salaries which increase in line with our CSIRO Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020. Our salary structure is available for review at any time by future and current team members by accessing this Agreement. Our salaries are specific to CSIRO and not linked to other Federal or State Government designations. You can get a better idea of our complete package by reviewing our pay and conditions of service in the CSIRO Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020.

Salary packaging

Salary Packaging is an Australian Taxation Office approved way of restructuring your income.

We offer flexible remuneration arrangements on a salary sacrifice basis which allows staff to more effectively package their salary to meet individual financial objectives. In CSIRO, it enables you to lease or buy (through fortnightly payments) a motor vehicle; or to make Superannuation contributions to an approved Super scheme; or payments towards CSIROCARE child care centres out of your pre-tax salary rather than your after-tax salary.

Social club

When joining team CSIRO, you’ll not only be working with the best and brightest minds out there, you’ll also have the opportunity to spend time with your colleagues in a social setting. Each site has their own social club that runs various events and activities throughout the year; including things like morning teas, BBQs, event celebrations such as Melbourne Cup and International Women’s Day, outings such as bird watching, lunch time fitness and yoga classes, regular gardening club meetings, fundraising activities and more.

Study assistance

Many team members undertake additional study while they are with us. Financial assistance with studies may be granted to team members who undertake an educational commitment, as well as the opportunity to access other benefits like study leave.  Contact us now to find out more:

Our employer contribution rate for PSSap is 15.4% per annum.
