Grasp the opportunity to work on a real world project and collaborate with our leading scientists over the summer holidays. Applications for the 2018/2019 Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships are now open

About our undergraduate vacation scholarships

While your student cohort are kicking back over the summer break, you'll be collaborating with our leading scientists, engineers and their teams as an undergraduate vacation scholar and immersing yourself in solving a real world problem and gaining valuable new skills that aren't taught on campus.

Here's what you need to know

Every year we offer around 100 opportunities to promising undergraduate students in a number of scientific, engineering and related disciplines.

This program is run over the Australian summer holidays and placements typically begin in late November or early December. Your time with us will range from 8 – 12 weeks in length and all vacation scholarships are full time. The location of your placement could be at your local CSIRO site or one of our other 50 locations across the country, depending on your area of interest and the project you'll be working on.

You will receive a stipend for the duration of your scholarship. And in some cases students may also receive a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs.

What the scholarship offers you

Successful applicants will expand their skills and knowledge by joining a project team to explore and solve a problem in a real world setting. Our placements give you the opportunity to join us for an extended period of time and learn from our scientists and experts in our world class facilities. Many of our placements often provide opportunities to attend conferences and training courses.

You will be a valuable member of your project team where your input is heard and your contributions make a difference, while also being mentored to help you shape your professional career and gain access to people who live and breathe areas aligned to your studies.

Students are usually required to write a report on their work experience and have the opportunity to make a presentation to their peers and supervisors at the end of the scholarship.

Beyond their scholarship, students may progress to further opportunities with us. In the past, some students have been offered paid employment, and others have had the opportunity to undertake their Honours or Postdoctoral projects jointly with us. In fact, several of our very senior managers can trace their history with the organisation back to a summer vacation scholarship.
