Drawing on CSIRO’s world leading research, we have helped the energy and mining sectors prepare for the future. From helping to establish Australia’s hydrogen industry to developing industry growth roadmaps, our work explores how to leverage technology, create resilience and decarbonise all while creating new opportunities for industry.
In collaboration with Boeing, CSIRO has produced a report that outlines a pathway forward for the adoption of hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels to support decarbonisation within the commercial aviation industry. The report takes a long-term view – identifying short, medium and long-term adoption opportunities that will assist the industry in reducing emissions and prioritising sustainability as it recovers from the impacts of COVID-19.
The Hydrogen RD&D reports identifies opportunities and priorities for hydrogen research, development and demonstration with the view to support a domestic and export hydrogen industry within Australia.
CSIRO Futures, in collaboration with CSIRO Energy, embarked on a project to identify the opportunities and priorities for hydrogen research, development and demonstration (RD&D) with the view to support a domestic and export hydrogen industry within Australia. The report outlines steps to translate Australia's strong hydrogen research capability into a key pillar of the nation’s energy and export profile. The report was developed in parallel with, and supports the Australian Government’s Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy, and builds upon CSIRO’s National Hydrogen Roadmap, which discussed commercial opportunities for hydrogen technology implementation.
The National Hydrogen Roadmap provides a blueprint for the development of a hydrogen industry in Australia.
With the global hydrogen industry on the verge of reaching a tipping point, CSIRO Futures, with support from CSIRO Energy, led the development of the National Hydrogen Roadmap. The primary objective of the Roadmap is to provide a blueprint for the development of a hydrogen industry in Australia. With several activities already underway, it is designed to help inform the next series of investment amongst various stakeholder groups so that Australia"s hydrogen industry can continue to scale in a coordinated manner.
The Low Emissions Technology Roadmap was prepared for the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy to provide input to the Government’s 2017 Climate Policy Review.
In 2016, CSIRO was engaged by the Australian Government to develop the Low Emissions Technology Roadmap to inform the 2017 Climate Policy review. The objectives of the report were to understand the technology options Australia has at its disposal to meet its emissions abatement commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement and identify new economic opportunities for Australian industry. The Low Emissions Technology Roadmap provides an independent, science-based analysis of the technology options in the energy sector that can help Australia meet its 2030 emissions reduction target and create new opportunities for local industry.
Oil and Gas - A Roadmap for unlocking future growth opportunities for Australia
Despite prior successes, the Australian oil and gas sector faces many challenges. A confluence of global trends and domestic challenges require new ways of thinking about the exploration and production of oil and gas, and the future of the energy sector more generally. Overcoming challenges will require innovation and new collaboration strategies. The Oil and Gas Roadmap identifies four high-impact pathways to growth that are enabled by science and technology to cost-effectively unlock resources, improve the economics of current assets, minimise impacts on air and water and identify new revenue streams.
The METS Roadmap explores the changing business environment and identifies five opportunities where Australian METS companies can be internationally competitive.
Australia's Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector has an important role to play in the continued success of Australia's mining industry. However, the mining industry's increasing dependence on specialist technologies, alongside the impact of global mining megatrends, creates new opportunities and threats for Australia's METS sector. The METS Roadmap explores the changing business environment and identifies five opportunities where Australian METS companies can be internationally competitive: data driven mining decisions, social and environmental sustainability, exploration under cover, advanced extraction and mining automation and robotics.
This report is developed through industry perceptions and analysis of the innovation performance, barriers and opportunities for Australia's energy and resources sector.
Natural resources have long been a significant contributor to Australia’s growth and prosperity. While the sector has a strong history of innovation, future success will hinge on the sector’s ability to adapt in the context of long-term opportunities and challenges. Drawing on independent analysis and interviews with senior leaders across Australia's largest minerals and energy companies, this study examines the barriers to innovation and maps out a way forward for innovation success - through a tailored approach to the needs of individual companies and challenges.
This report examines the role innovation in the mining sector could play in Chile’s economic growth, human capital development, and solving Chile’s major technical challenges in energy and water.
In partnership with CSIRO Futures, CSIRO Chile developed a report on the role that innovation in the mining sector could play in Chile’s economic growth, human capital development, and solving Chile’s major technical challenges in energy and water. It presents a snapshot of the current state of the industry, its opportunities and challenges in the context of the global mega-trends that will affect it over the next 20 years, as well as evidence-based future scenarios, both positive and negative, to promote a constructive national dialogue about the future.
