To train and educate consumers on Smartstream’s medical safety products, a recent graduate was engaged to develop a simulation app with the support of CSIRO’s SME Connect Team and the Innovation Connections Facilitation and Graduate Placement Grant.

Background

Smartstream is a Channel Management Company for the Qlicksmart range of products, and was established to meet the need for specialist distribution management. Products include the range of Scalpel Blade Removers (BladeFLASK, Blade CASSETTE, BladeNeedleSYSTEM and BladeSINGLE), Ampoule Openers (SnapIT and SnapIT Lite) and Medication Labelling Tool (CheckCLIP).

Through the simulation app, Smartstream now have access to train and educate consumers on their medical safety products, which has led to new market access, increased business competitiveness and business transformation.

Smartstream’s mission is to bridge the gap between innovation and the end-user by establishing and maintaining a global network of independent distributors. Smartstream has become a leader in healthcare channel management, providing "hands-on" support to healthcare workers and inventors to commercialise global safety innovations.

The challenge

Smartstream supports its distributors in creating a ‘conversation’ with end users and potential product champions. One key area is through educating medical practitioners on the benefits and uses of Qlicksmart’s safety products so they can be embedded into safety systems within medical facilities.

Smartstream identified that initial one-on-one discussions followed up with fact sheets wasn’t creating sufficient engagement and often the factsheets were put on a shelf never to be looked at again.

There was a need to improve medical practitioner engagement and support their sales representatives to improve the communication of their products.

Solution

Smartstream, with the support of CSIRO’s SME Connect Team and the Innovation Connections Facilitation and Graduate Placement Grant, engaged a recent graduate, Amdo Yuan (Master of IT; Human Computer Interactions), to develop an interactive training tool.

By researching the best training methods for clinicians, incorporating gaming principles and following an iterative testing process, the app provides an engaging learning experience that integrates with existing processes.

Through the simulation app, Smartstream now have access to train and educate consumers on their medical safety products. This led to new market access, increased business competitiveness and business transformation. Furthermore, this functionality is new to the company which led to job creation and upskilling.
