The Indigenous STEM Education Project demonstrates the link between the traditional ecological knowledge of Australia's First Nations Peoples and the science curriculum and how it can be taught using inquiry-based methods.

It comprises of six program elements that cumulatively: 

  • develop teacher competency to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students in STEM studies
  • support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who have a passion for STEM to pursue University studies
  • identify and promote STEM role models to inspire the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The project has a national footprint working with primary, secondary and tertiary students in remote, regional and metropolitan areas.

All the programs are monitored and evaluated by a dedicated team to determine what works and why in order to improve practice and share lessons.
