The Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS) is a nine day residential program held in Adelaide, Newcastle and Townsville each year.

Cultural and leadership strand

Each summer school has a Cultural Patron who is a local leader in Indigenous education and oversees the cultural strand of the program. The Cultural Patron spends time with the students and conducts workshops exploring cultural identity and Indigenous knowledges.

Students are involved in a variety of cultural experiences such as

  • fire pit nights,
  • yarning circles,
  • learning about traditional medicines and bush tucker,
  • traditional art, music and dance workshops
  • traditional cooking.

Students have the opportunity to connect with their culture while exploring the links between traditional knowledges and western science.

Academic strand

Throughout the summer schools there is a focus on the science inquiry process with students encouraged to be inquisitive and investigate science concepts. Students at each summer school have the opportunity to work with two academic providers from the local area. These could include groups from CSIRO, faculties from local universities and other relevant organisations. Students spend a day with each academic provider allowing them the opportunity to explore a particular area of science with immersive activities and a chance to learn more about opportunities in that field.

After working with the academic providers, participants work in teams to develop and conduct an open inquiry inspired by the academic activities. Students work together to develop an inquiry question and methodology before conducting their investigation and presenting their findings at the final presentation ceremony.

Leadership and support strand

During the summer schools the leadership and support strand focusses on leadership and personal development, while increasing awareness of STEM careers and pathways. Students participate in workshops focussed on personal awareness and skill development. Networking events with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) professionals allow students to explore career options and workshops looking at pathways into further study help students with planning for their senior schooling and beyond.
