Teachers and STEM professionals work together to increase STEM skills, knowledge and confidence for the teacher through a range of activities including mentoring, career talks and hands-on activities to name a few!

Teacher + STEM professional = Partnership

Each partnership is unique and different as it's about bringing each person's areas of expertise and working together to bring STEM skills to life in the classroom. The partners determine what works best for them and the students, with support from the national STEM Professionals in Schools team. This allows partners to develop their own style and story for the benefit of students, while ensuring an ongoing successful partnership.

Some things you might like to think about include:

  • your time commitments
  • the expertise you can bring to the partnership
  • how the activity can support the teacher in the delivery of the Australian curriculum.

You will need to provide evidence of, the relevant Working With Children/Vulnerable People Check and National Police Certificate as part of CSIRO’s Child Safe Procedure. If you don’t have this documentation, the STEM Professionals in Schools team can support you to obtain it and cover the associated costs.

Partnership models

Different partnership models you may want to consider include:

  • Developing lessons with the teacher that align to the general capabilities of the Australian Curriculum
  • Mentoring teachers
  • Site visits or field trips
  • Running specialist STEM clubs
  • Career talks and presentations
  • Hands-on demonstrations
  • Supporting students for specialist projects
  • Online engagement

At a time where STEM skills are critical to building an innovative Australian workforce of the future, volunteering programs like STEM Professionals in Schools are helping to inspire students by introducing them to the opportunities that STEM careers can provide.

All STEM professionals involved in the program need to have a National Police Certificate and Working with Children Check as part of CSIRO's Child Safe Procedure. We can provide administration support for this.
