MNF News Update | 17 Sept 2024

Join the MNF Technology and Innovation Advisory Group (TIAG)

Are you a motivated Early Career Researcher (ECR) interested in enhancing your career development by contributing to advice that will inform the ongoing focus on world class research technical capabilities delivered through CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator?

We have exciting opportunities open for up to two ECRs to join the Marine National Facility (MNF) Technology and Innovation Advisory Group (TIAG). You will work alongside respected experts to facilitate excellent marine science for Australia.

About TIAG

The TIAG has been established to provide the MNF with advice on current and future technology advances to support continuous improvements in the capabilities supplied to the research community. It will be a vital tool in representing the views of the broader science community on leading practice methodologies, technology advancements and future marine research requirements.

The TIAG will support the MNF in finding opportunities for collaboration and equipment sharing to improve ocean research capability with other marine research institutions in the region including government agencies, research institutions and philanthropic organisations. The TIAG will bring together expertise across atmospheric, biological, geoscience and oceanographic research, as well as autonomous technologies and robotics.

The TIAG will meet virtually 3-4 times each year and more often at critical times.

To contribute to the development of the next generation of the Australian marine science and technology community, the MNF is seeking to appoint up to two ECRs as TIAG members to attend meetings and contribute to the discussions.

About the role

To be eligible, an ECR candidate should ideally have less than 10 years’ experience since PhD confirmation and currently be funded in an Australian postdoctoral position, such as a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) or Ocean Sciences (OCE) Postdoctoral fellow or equivalent.

To be successful, you will need to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • a strong background and practical experience in a relevant research discipline, such as atmospherics, geosciences, oceanography, biology, autonomous technologies, marine technologies or robotics, preferably with a focus on technology and innovation
  • commitment to a research field reliant on access to blue-water research vessels
  • ability to communicate effectively with a range of research stakeholders
  • capacity to critically assess technology and innovation proposals.

The TIAG will meet virtually via video conferencing 3–4 times a year. The first meeting is scheduled for 14 October 2024. Some preparatory work is required before meetings.

ECR appointment

ECR appointment is for a fixed term of three years. ERC members will:

  • be given affiliate status with CSIRO
  • be subject to CSIRO Code of Conduct
  • be allocated a mentor within the TIAG membership, with the aim that the appointee will gain a strong appreciation and knowledge of the process undertaken by the TIAG, establish networks, and enhance the development of their career.

There is no remuneration or sitting fees for TIAG members.

Visit the TIAG webpage to find out more and to view the TIAG Terms of Reference.
