The past twelve months have seen some big changes for the Marine National Facility (MNF), most notably the announcement of Australian Government funding to move to full year research operations of research vessel Investigator. This change brings with it a significant increase in opportunities for Australia’s marine research community.

The MNF, with advice from the MNF Steering Committee, is working to ensure that Investigator is delivering the best outcomes for the marine research community and the nation, and continues to deliver high impact and high quality science and data. To ensure these objectives are being met, there will be an independent review of the framework that governs how access to Investigator is managed and sea time is allocated.

Importantly, the review aims to ensure that decision-making in relation to allocation of sea time is efficient, equitable and transparent, and that it optimises use of MNF resources.

The review will be conducted in the first half of 2019 by Dr Bruce Mapstone and will be informed by consultation with a wide cross-section of stakeholders from the science community, government and industry users and other research facilities operators. The consultation is in progess now and the final report will be delivered in May 2019.
