We are involved in key research in the rapid global response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The work builds on our strong history protecting people in Australia and around the world from the threat of infectious diseases.
Our first challenge has been to get understanding this new virus ā how long it takes to develop and replicate, how it impacts the respiratory system, how the host responds and how it can be transmitted. We also looking to understand its origins, how it may be changing and how it behaves.
Our work is a critical part of the vaccine development pipeline. Our efforts ensure that only the most promising vaccine candidates are moved through to trials on humans.
We are working with government and manufacturers to build local capability and supply of materials to rapidly address demand for medical materials needed to respond to COVID-19.
Forecasting the spread of COVID-19 is no easy task but a sense of the numbers is important for appreciating the challenges ahead and is critical to managing our response.
We are working closely within international consortia ā BSL4ZNet and EVAg ā to share information on activity, best practice and reagents and materials, including SARS CoV-2 viruses. This will ensure we do not compete or duplicate our research and development efforts.
As the world slows down, the demand for technological solutions has gone viral. Digital solutions have quickly shifted from a slow adoption path to a record pace of uptake. But none is this is new to CSIRO having been at the forefront of eHealth solutions and technological innovation and this is also helping the response to COVID-19.
Come with us as we take you for a look inside the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (formerly known as the Australian Animal Health Laboratory). Today you are a scientist working on SARS Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that is causing the disease COVID-19.
