We are looking for people living in Australia aged 18 years or older who have experienced any form of gut symptoms or distress, such as bloating, abdominal pain, excessive flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation to participate in an-online questionnaire. As part of the study you will be asked about the frequency, severity and impact of your gut symptoms, and the dietary and lifestyle strategies you use to manage or optimise your gut health.

Background

Gut health has been of major focus in shaping the future of the food, nutraceutical and biotech industries in recent years.

Global evidence highlights that gut symptoms that negatively impact on the everyday lives of individuals are very common, with symptoms occurring in over a third of individuals frequently and affecting almost everyone at some point in their lives. These symptoms could relate to the upper gut (e.g. heartburn, excessive belching, nausea), the lower gut (e.g. bloating, abdominal pain, excessive flatulence) or regularity (e.g. diarrhoea, constipation).

The most recent estimates suggest that around 1 in 2 Australians suffer from gut symptoms/distress, many of whom will not seek medical support.

CSIRO is conducting a gut health survey to better understand the Australian 'experience' of gut symptoms and 'need' in relation to management strategies which will provide a more in-depth consideration of how gut issues shape the everyday lives of Australians.

About the study

This study is looking to collect up-to-date data on gut symptoms and management that affect the quality of life of Australians gut health and well-being.

Study participation involves completion of a questionnaire which asks a range of questions around gut health including any gastrointestinal symptoms they are currently experiencing and the strategies they are using to manage or optimise their gut health and overall well-being.

This work will help our researchers better understand the impacts of gut health symptoms on Australian's lifestyles and how gut health is currently managed. It will also look at how Australian's are sourcing information about gut health.

  • All responses are anonymous.
  • The questionnaire will take approximately 25 minutes to complete.
  • On completion of the questionnaire 50 randomly selected participants, who provide CSIRO their contact details, will receive a $50 e-gift voucher to acknowledge their valuable contribution to scientific research. These contact details will be deleted as soon as the vouchers have been distributed to participants.

This study has been approved by the CSIRO Human Research Ethics Committee
