We are looking for individuals in Adelaide to participate in a study to see if CSIRO's Ultra Low Gluten (ULG) barley is safe for consumption by people with coeliac disease.

Background

Gluten-free diets are traditionally low in fibre, high in fat and more costly. The market for gluten-free products is growing rapidly and there is considerable demand for gluten-free, healthy cereal grains. CSIRO has developed a high fibre, ultra low gluten (ULG) barley to add to the fibre-deficient diets of individuals avoiding gluten.

The level of gluten in the ULG barley is nearly undetectable and is under 13 ppm (parts per million). In Europe and the USA this grain would qualify as 'gluten free' as authorities have set a limit of under 20 ppm for 'gluten free' foods. Due to the different legislative requirements in Australia foods suitable for coeliac disease must be completely gluten free.

About this study

The objective of this study is to determine if CSIRO's ULG barley is safe for consumption by participants with coeliac disease. In addition the study will determine if the high fibre characteristics of the ULG barley improves the bowel health of those eating the grain.

Study criteria

You would need to fit the following criteria if you wanted to participate in this study:

  • have medically diagnosed coeliac disease
  • are otherwise healthy and aged 18-75 years
  • have been following a strict gluten free diet for at least two years
  • are willing to consume study test foods for eight weeks
  • are prepared to attend Flinders Medical Centre or Noarlunga Health Centre to undergo two endoscopies.
