We've partnered with the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in India to develop a low cost diagnostic kit for detection of tuberculosis.

The challenge

Detection of tuberculosis

Each year 1.98 million new cases of tuberculosis (TB) are detected in India, resulting in an annual death rate of around 280,000. This is the highest rate of TB in the entire world, accounting for a fifth of all cases.

Our response

Low cost sensors

Our teams have already developed world leading chemiresistor technologies capable of screening fluids to identify a variety of diseases.

Thanks to the Australia India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) we've been able to partner with the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) to tackle this issue. Together with the support of Australian business Axxin and their cost effective platforms and diagnostic products, we're exploring ways to have real time patient information transferred to and from India.

There are up to 60 days in which those affected with TB displays clinical signs, in this time there can be extensive spread of the disease. Early detection could significantly reduce, if not stop, transmission.

Based on an ink-jet printable, nanoparticle-based chemiresistor sensor array, the diagnostic device will provide a result within a few minutes using non-invasive patient samples such as urine, breath or sputum.

The results

Preventing spread of TB

We're hoping to see in the next year the deployment of a simple, robust and inexpensive technology in the hands of physicians across India for the detection of TB.

This technology could offer developing countries and urban communities an opportunity for early detection in TB and potentially other infectious diseases.

We're seeking partners in this important fight against tuberculosis.
