Our goal is to deliver science and technology options for the discovery and efficient development of Australia’s mineral resource endowment that enable flow-on benefits to the wider national economy.
We're focused on delivering in three key impact areas for industry and the nation:
- Growing Australia's resource base
- Increasing productivity
- Driving social and environmental performance.

This overview of the Mineral Resources impact strategy includes the business unit goal through to impact areas with impact statements as well as the roles of internal programs and other business units.
Goal
Deliver science and technology options for the discovery and efficient development of Australia’s mineral resource endowment that enable flow-on benefits to the wider national economy.
Impact areas:
- Growing Australia’s resource base
- Driving social and environmental performance
- Increasing productivity

---|---|---|
Exploration through cover: Australia’s resource base hidden under cover is effectively explored and available for development. Result: The major challenge for mineral exploration in Australia – the depth of cover – is now being overcome. Discovery at depth is delivering major minerals development opportunities of national importance. |
Orebody knowledge: Rapid, multi-scale mineral resource characterisation to underpin TBL planning, design, development and closure. Result: The enhanced quality, quantity and speed of access to orebody information has created an exceptionally detailed digital view of mineral deposits - which is transforming the industry’s approach to design and control in mining, materials management and processing. |
Unlocking Australian ores: Resource development and processing options for complex and stranded Australian orebodies. Result: Both brownfield and greenfield opportunities for development of otherwise uneconomic mineralisation have been realised because the inadequacy of existing mining and processing options for otherwise difficult mineralogy, resource complexity or grade limitations has been overcome. |
Low-impact mining: Precision and in-place mining technologies to exploit inherent orebody variability and manage TBL optimisation. Result: The combination of high volume production and selective mining has become a reality thanks to innovative mining technologies which interface with on-the-fly digital resource information. The triple bottom line downstream effects are evident both in reduced processing costs per tonne of ore and in improved waste, water and energy footprints. |
Environment and community: Evidence based analysis for informed TBL management of mineral resources to the benefit of all stakeholders. Result: Application of evidence based methodology provides an informed basis for analysis, technology choices and decision making which contribute to triple bottom line value on site, industry and national scales. |
Process optimisation: Targeted unit process development, measurement, modelling, optimisation and integration for safe and efficient mineral production. Result: Enhanced productivity has been achieved through targeted unit process optimisation, integration or development – with impact variously at site, commodity or industry levels. |
Selective ore management: High-throughput, no-contact sensor technologies and systems for high tonnage ore-waste sorting to improve efficiency and reduce input costs. Result: Fit-for-purpose sensor technologies matched to high tonnage throughput are now widely applied to materials streams, enabling differentiation and separation of ore and waste components as never before. Grade management, process intensification and controlled materials routing yield substantial economic and environmental benefit. |
