FishMap is an online tool that provides the geographical and depth ranges of some 4500 Australian marine fishes.

The challenge

Rich marine biodiversity

Australia's marine biodiversity is among the richest in the world, with more than 5,000 species of fishes currently known from our waters, and at least one new species of fish being described (named) every month. What are these species? Where do they live? What do they look like?

Our response

Accessible information about Australian fish species

We worked with the Atlas of Living Australia to develop FishMap , a free online mapping tool that allows anyone interested in fish to discover which fish species occur at any location or depth throughout the marine waters of Australia's continental shelf and slope.

FishMap builds on more than a century of research by Australian ichthyologists, and generates illustrated lists of fishes by area, depth, family or ecosystem.

It is the only resource of its kind in the world that covers virtually all species of marine fish found in the marine waters of an entire continent.

The results

A range of uses

FishMap lets people create regional illustrated species lists for almost all of Australia's marine fishes. It can be used for:

  • research
  • planning
  • management
  • fisheries
  • conservation
  • recreation
  • citizen science.
