We're focussed on enterprise and industry

All businesses in Australia need to understand and, supported by the right information, develop their own response plan to climate change.

This was first described by the Council of Financial Regulators who recognised that Australian businesses were particularly exposed to climate change and this would present a risk to the Australian Economy. Our mission explores how science can assist this challenge.

Multi-sector facing climate science and services have been available for decades, with climate data and information available to all Australians through a variety of channels. Feedback from industry is that this information can be hard to use and interpret for business.

Australian businesses have also been accessing climate analytics that may not be fit for purpose for Australia. Also, it was also hard for businesses to understand how to connect physical climate risks to broader transitional risks that they and their supply chains would be exposed to as the economy decarbonises.

Through the Climate Intelligence Platform and Climate Innovation Hub we are providing the best available climate science in a format that business and industry have told us will enable them to make better decisions. Our work will contribute to improving resilience to climate risk, and assist in decarbonisation of the economy.

Opportunity

Powering the climate response of Australian businesses

The impacts of climate change are already being felt, and future risks are considered material, foreseeable and actionable by Australian financial regulators. In the private sector, organisations globally are under increasing pressure to understand their climate risk across supply chains and to accelerate their climate transition.

There is a growing demand for assistance to help prepare businesses for the opportunities and challenges that climate change presents. Given this demand for credible, science-backed climate risk insights, there is an opportunity to catalyse a new industry in climate intelligence, capable of servicing national and regional markets.

Alongside adaptation to current and future climate change risks, businesses are being driven to disclose their climate-related financial risks. These risks are related to both physical impacts and the need to transition to a net zero economy. This is already a mandatory requirement for some countries, and Australian industry is already responding to global market demand for such reporting.

This initiative will unlock climate intelligence for the private sector in Australia. It will provide enhanced knowledge and decision support tools to assist businesses in understanding how climate change will affect them, their customers, their supply chains and the economy more generally.

Through our efforts and collaborations with industry partners, and through the innovation system more generally, we will help industry transition to a more resilient and sustainable future.

Proposed focus

We are focused on making climate action easy for Australian businesses, enabling sustainable investments, and building new climate resilient industries.

We are building a place where businesses can access trusted, quality assured climate risk and hazard information, or to uncover realistic adaptation options.

Through a suite of analytical and visualisation tools we are equipping businesses with the necessary capabilities to build and tailor intelligent insights and reports.

The Climate Intelligence Platform

The Climate Intelligence Platform (the platform) provides data, analytics and guidance to support users to better understand their climate risk. The Climate Intelligence Platform can:

  • Help Australian businesses understand, adapt and transition while considering compound climate physical and transitional risk by bringing together CSIRO, Australian private sector and suppliers of climate intelligence in a secure environment, in a robust and defensible way.
  • Assist and advise companies to improve climate literacy, by providing easy and simple access to curated datasets and models which are plausible and valid scenarios backed by science.
  • Remove the 'black box' around climate science and scenario modelling by providing trusted data, data models and associated provenance.
  • Visualise and create multiple dimensions of data for both physical climate variables and economic factors.

Discussions with government and private sector companies occurred as part of a broad market consultation phase of the Climate Resilient Enterprise.  We collaborated with Microsoft, Australia’s banks and financial services sector, and Australian SMEs to build the platform.

We are now collaborating with Telstra, drawing on their commercial experience to deliver the platform pilot to Australia’s financial services sector and start engaging potential customers.

The Climate Innovation Hub

  • The Climate Innovation Hub is the place that Australian and regional businesses can come to access climate science expertise and build climate intelligence solutions that suit their needs.
  • The Hub is working hand in hand with Australian companies to design and develop solutions that help them understand how climate change will impact their organisations and industries.
  • The Hub is bringing together the capabilities and expertise of a range of researchers and scientists across Australia to help fast track development and delivery of climate intelligence solutions to Australian enterprises.

Our impact

We are achieving impact in three ways;

  • Industry has ready access to credible analytics and technical support on physical and transitional climate risk.
  • Enterprises are better equipped to mitigate climate risk and uncertainty whilst identifying adaptation options and investment opportunities.
  • Support the development of a sustainable, climate resilient economy.
