About the placement
This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Energy and Management Services Pty Ltd (EMS), a reputable energy consultancy recognised for delivering intelligent, data driven energy solutions for clients across Australia. EMS specialises in energy management, procurement, renewable solutions, and engineering services, helping organisations optimise energy use, reduce costs and advance toward a more sustainable future. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.
As an intern at EMS, you will contribute directly to decarbonisation strategy development, working with real client energy data to support emissions reduction, compliance reporting and the delivery of innovative, practical energy solutions. You will also work alongside a multidisciplinary team that values integrity, innovation, teamwork and strong client relationships
Your work will support the use of EMS’s proprietary analytics system, e21 EnergyPlus energy management and bill verification platform, to produce meaningful insights and visualisations that help customers understand their whole energy picture and identify the most productive opportunities for improvement.
There are two positions for students from different disciplines.
Your responsibilities will involve:
- Analysing client energy consumption, cost data, emissions profiles, and performance indicators to support strategic decarbonisation planning.
- Using EMS data tools and processes (including e21 EnergyPlus) to assist with bill verification, usage analysis, statutory reporting and irregularity identification.
- Supporting renewable and energy efficiency assessments through research, modelling inputs and preliminary feasibility analysis.
- Collaborating with EMS engineers and analysts to develop insights aligned with customer goals and regulatory requirements.
- Preparing written reports, presentations and visualisations that communicate findings clearly for internal and client audiences.
- Contributing to EMS’s innovation focused culture by assisting with improvements to data workflows, tools or customer facing resources.
Work arrangements
- Start date: May 2026
- Working arrangement: Part-time/ Full time (200 hours total)
- Remuneration: $25 per hour + superannuation + other benefits
- Location: in-person at 116/1 Howard St, Warners Bay NSW 2282
Desired capabilities
- Studying Engineering (Renewable Energy, Mechatronics, Electrical), Sustainability Sciences, Environmental Science, or a double degree including Finance.
- Demonstrated interest in the energy industry, sustainability and the clean energy transition.
- Understanding of emissions reporting frameworks, decarbonisation pathways, and energy related regulatory requirements.
- Ability to clearly communicate with clients and staff
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and preferably Power BI for data visualisation.
- Programming ability would be viewed favourably.
- Ability to interpret energy or technical data, think critically, and take a big picture approach.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Applicants must:
- Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
- Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
- Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of EMS or e21 EnergyPlus
- Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
