CSIRO has announced Jane Coram as the new Land and Water Director following a competitive international search.

Dr Peter Mayfield, CSIRO Executive Director for Environment, Energy and Resources, said Ms Coram had the unique depth of experience, breadth of environmental sciences domain knowledge and strong leadership credentials to ensure she was well qualified to build upon the organisation's innovation agenda across the land and water domain.

"Ms Coram's career spans 28 years of working to resolve natural resources management challenges," Dr Mayfield said.

"She has a deep understanding of land and water sciences and their potential to constructively inform decision making.

"Ms Coram has academic qualifications in hydrogeology and earth sciences, has held senior executive positions including as Chief Scientist and leader of the groundwater capability at Geosciences Australia, and is currently Chief Executive of the National Measurement Institute.

"Ms Coram brings a formidable combination of senior research leadership and domain knowledge, and I look forward to the positive contribution she will make to the CSIRO leadership team."

CSIRO Land and Water is a global leader in delivering scientific solutions to address complex challenges and opportunities that arise at the interface of human activity and the environment such as cities, mining and industrial developments.

Ms Coram will commence with CSIRO in June 2018 and will be based in Canberra.

Ms Jane Coram

Ms Jane Coram's career in natural resources science delivery spans nearly 30 years. It has focused on applying scientific solutions to natural resources management challenges, particularly in relation to groundwater and groundwater-dependent ecosystem management.

With formal qualifications in hydrogeology and earth sciences, Ms Coram has a broad multidisciplinary understanding of land and water sciences. She has held senior leadership positions including as Acting Chief Scientist and leader of the groundwater capability at Geosciences Australia, and more recently Chief Executive of the National Measurement Institute. Jane's multidisciplinary perspective borne of her involvement in nearly three decades of national land and water resource issues has seen her provide scientific advice across numerous committees and boards.

Her experience and technical knowledge spans a range of issues including coal seam gas, coal and unconventional energy resources, uranium mining and radioactive waste disposal, groundwater sustainability, dryland salinity, groundwater-surface water dynamics; forest ecology and management; reserve design and biodiversity management.

Jane leads CSIRO Land and Water; a global leader in delivering scientific solutions to address the complex challenges and opportunities that arise at the interface of human activity and the environment such as cities, mining and industrial developments.

Jane's interests include science communication, mentoring emerging science leaders especially women scientists, and working to provide inspired and innovative science solutions to national problems.
