Farming practices research
Chameleon water sensor
We have developed an accessible system for the world's most vulnerable farmers that notifies them of their crop's soil water levels, and helps them make decisions that significantly boost their crop yields.
Integrated Pest Management
Pests cause extensive damage to crops. We’re working with industry to develop effective and sustainable pest control in agriculture using the principles of integrated pest management.
Life cycle assessments
Capturing the full extent of resource usage and environmental impacts from agricultural production and service delivery, and identifying areas for improvement.
Our precision agriculture research is addressing key challenges in a range of farming systems, including viticulture, broadacre cropping, dairy and sugar farming. We're working with industry to develop and refine tools to assess, monitor and redress environmental and economic risks associated with agricultural practices.
We have developed an environmentally-friendly, sprayable biodegradable polymer membrane product that can help farmers produce more during harvest, on the same land area, while using less water, nutrients and agrochemicals.
Water repellent soils
Water repellent sandy soils are a major problem across the western and southern grain growing regions of Australia. We have found a number of farming practices which improve water management in repellent sandy soils.
CSIRO and research partners working on the National Water Use Efficiency (WUE) Initiative have identified ways to improve yield through better WUE, in some cases by as much as 91 per cent.
