The challenge
Exploring research opportunities
MAXONIQ (previously known as OMX Solutions) designs and manufactures a range of fully customised, patient specific devices for Craniomaxillofacial (bone structures above the shoulder) surgery.
MAXONIQ uses a totally digital platform to create implants and devices. It uses patient computed tomography scans (CT) and software to perfectly match to patient morphology. MAXONIQ worked with CSIRO SME Connect Innovation Facilitator Joseph Dodd to explore research collaboration opportunities that would be achievable and of value to the business.
Our response
Placement of business researchers
Through the Australian Government's Entrepreneurs' Programme, Innovation Connections service, MAXONIQ accessed two Innovation Connections Business Researcher Placement grants to collaborate with CSIRO’s Additive Manufacturing group.
MAXONIQ also accessed a CSIRO Kick-Start voucher to further support the research projects.
The first collaboration with CSIRO’s Additive Manufacturing group delivered a new proprietary software platform enabling MAXONIQ to fast-track the design and production of 3D implants, reducing commercial outgoings and expanding the business opportunities into other medical 3D printing areas. The second project, developed an enhanced user-friendly system for surgeons to independently align teeth, saving MAXONIQ and surgeons’ valuable time and producing enhanced and reliable designs for patient function and aesthetics.
The results
Increased market potential
Working with experts from CSIRO the ability to develop leading edge software created increased usability, productivity, production capability and therefore market potential in a rapid time frame.
The Entrepreneurs' Programme funding has been extremely useful for both our R&D and profile for investors. Entrepreneurs' Programme funding definitely added value to both our last seed funding round (over-subscribed), and our planned Series A raise later this year to further drive our runway of projects and export opportunities - rapidly.
