Need for collaboration
HowToo develops cloud-based software for authoring and publication of online training content. Founded on several decades' experience spanning instructional design, cognitive science and eLearning best practice, HowToo's strategy focusses on providing digital tools that enable non-technical creation of eLearning content that supports organisational capability.
To effectively meet these strategic aims and without compromising content quality or end user learning outcomes, HowToo sought to utilise artificial intelligence (AI) and embed associated logic within its software to support eLearning content creation, publication and quality assurance.
Accessing our services
Assisted by Innovation Connections Facilitator James Robinson from CSIRO SME Connect, HowToo was introduced to University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) School of Computer Science and successfully applied for an Entrepreneurs’ Programme Innovation Connections Researcher Placement and Business Researcher Placement grants.
Through close collaboration between HowToo's instructional design and software engineering staff alongside UTS' data science and AI research expertise, HowToo was able to develop advanced software functionality based on semantic search and natural language processing.
This included user support offering:
- assistance in selecting appropriate authoring templates by specifying a learning outcome or verb; and
- identification of key online training attributes alongside learning science best practice to create an intelligence model providing real-time quality assessment, evaluation and feedback.
HowToo has also utilised an Innovation Connections Graduate Placement grant to support the hiring of a dedicated data science and AI graduate with expertise to further leverage the outcomes from the UTS collaboration. Recent successes include securing a $2.5m raise with investors led by Moelis Australia's growth capital fund, MA Financial Group, with co-investments from Jelix Ventures and Californian based VC firm ALIAVIA Ventures. Meanwhile, although HowToo's software has only been available in the market for eighteen months, it recently ranked in the world's top 15 eLearning authoring tools by the trusted eLearning Industry digital network.
To support international growth, HowToo is also participating in Austrade's Landing Pads program (San Francisco) as it prepares for US market entry, customer acquisition and partner channel development.
Innovation Connections enabled us to quickly find the right capability to support our R&D needs and embed new expertise within our business.
