What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?

AMR is estimated to cause more than 700,000 deaths every year. The Nutrition and Health Program have been working with Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Mission initiated by CSIRO in identifying potential nutritional solutions to help reduce AMR in humans.

About the study

We will investigate the use of a combination of nutritional interventions to reduce AMR. In this study, we will assess whether natural nutritional interventions enhance gut microbial diversity and profiles, reducing resistant bacteria in the gut as well as immune functions in humans over eight weeks.

This study is taking place in Adelaide, and you will be required to attend our SAHMRI clinic in Adelaide’s CBD for two appointments for approximately 2.5 hours each. During the study you will take a nutritional supplement daily.

At the completion of this study, you will be provided with a $240 reimbursement to thank you for your time taken to participate in this research project and to cover any expenses that you may experience.

Who can participate?

Healthy males and females aged 18 to 65 years who have had antibiotics in the last three months may be eligible to participate in this study.

There are certain criteria you must meet to be eligible to participate in this study. These criteria along with other further criteria related to your health will be assessed during the screening process.

Key Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Access to a smartphone and willing to download a free application from the app store
  2. Access own email account
  3. Males and Females aged 18 to 65 of age at clinic screen
  4. BMI of greater than 18.5 to less than 35 (we can help measure this for you)
  5. Have had an episode of acute infection (any type) requiring at least one course of antibiotics in the past 3 months
  6. Do not have a gastrointestinal health condition or symptoms such as pain, reflux, diarrhoea or constipation, diabetes, cancer, renal or liver disease in the last 12 months
  7. Non-Smoker
  8. Must not have participated in another trial within the past month
  9. Not taking steroids (corticosteroids, progestogen, androgens and oestrogens)
  10. Not currently taking medication for hypertension or high cholesterol
  11. Not currently taking supplements (probiotics, prebiotics, fibre, micronutrients, multivitamins, essential oils) or functional foods (fermented food, polyphenols) in the 4 weeks leading up to Visit 1.
  12. Not Pregnant or lactating
