What is the purpose of this study?

To understand the development of gut microbiota during weaning and to assess effect of prebiotic ingredients on shaping the healthy gut microbiota in infants. 

What is involved in participating in this study?

  • Complete an online survey.
  • Provide your baby's stool samples, 5 in total.
    • We will arrange collection of the stool samples from your door.
    • You won't need to attend the clinic during the study.
  • Provide information about your baby's feeding and diet prior to each stool sample collection.
    • Your baby does not need to consume any particular foods during the study period, it is feeding as usual. Food is not supplied while participating in the study.

Attendance

No attendance required to participate in this study. Participation in this study is completed at home and over the phone.

How long will participation in this study take? 

The duration of the study is approximately a 6–8-month period, however, activities are centred around 5 stool sample collections. Study activities aren't required between collection events. 

  • The first sample collection takes place preweaning, before your baby starts solid food (approximately 4-6 months old). 
  • Then 3 samples will be collected after your child starts solid food, during weaning. 
  • The final sample will be collected when your child is around 12 months old, at the later stage of weaning. 

Who can participate in this study? 

Contact us if your baby:

  • Has not started solid foods.
  • Is at least 4 months old.
  • Was born after 37 weeks of pregnancy.
  • If you live in Adelaide and surrounding areas (within 20 km radius of the CBD). 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Infants born prematurely (gestational age <37 weeks).
  • Infants with birth weight <2500g.
  • Infants who have been given antibiotics since birth.
  • Infants who have a diagnosis of any medical conditions. 

Please note:

  • Other criteria exist and will be assessed during the study screening.

How do I participate in this study?

To be eligible to take part in this research, there are a few criteria you and your child must meet.

Will there be remuneration for my time?

Remuneration of $140 will be provided to families for participation in the study.
